THE EDITORIAL ANGLEWhere does the value sit when customers already have their DNA data?

Two ideas to take away.

  1. Describe the specific problem your service solves before listing the technology behind it.
  2. Make interpretation and limitations part of the customer experience.

Meet Dr. Tyler Panzner.

Dr. Tyler Panzner is a PhD-trained scientist working in genetic interpretation and personalised health. In this episode, he describes his background in research, his work analysing genetic tests and the path to building a consultation business. His perspective connects genetics with pharmacology and the practical questions people bring about supplements.

Where does the value sit when customers already have their DNA data?

Tyler explains how revisiting his own raw genetic data changed the questions he asked about his health. He then describes helping friends and family before moving into paid consultations. Starting at a low price gave him a way to test whether people outside his immediate circle found the service useful.

We explore what customers are actually buying when they receive a genetic report. A long document is not necessarily a clear plan. Tyler argues that interpretation needs to account for context rather than turning isolated findings into blanket recommendations. The conversation also covers organic social media, authenticity and the difficulty of scaling a business built around one expert.

Personalisation is easy to promise and harder to deliver. As genetic information becomes easier to obtain, the commercial challenge moves towards making it understandable and useful without overstating what it can predict. Education, transparent boundaries and trust become part of the product.

The conversation with Dr. Tyler Panzner delves into the significance of genetic testing in understanding individual health and wellness, emphasizing how genetics can inform dietary choices and supplement use. Dr. Panzner shares his personal journey with genetics, the complexities of genetic testing, and the importance of personalized medicine in achieving optimal health outcomes. -- Dr Panzer learned it the hard way. Burnt out during his PhD, he went back into his own raw DNA data and found that some of the well-researched supplements he took every day were revving up his nervous system instead of helping. Then he built a business out of it. He started at $50 a consult, with no following, not even sure a PhD could work as a practitioner. Today he's worked with over 1,000 clients and built an audience of hundreds of thousands. He's never run a single ad. In the episode we get into the genetic report that recommended curcumin, then told the same person a line later that they were prone to low iron. Why a 200-page report can be as unhelpful as a five-gene one. The quiz-based "personalised" supplement packs I'd tell anyone to avoid. And how he built a personal brand with no marketer, at a time when AI lets anyone sound like an expert. Most of the supplement industry makes money when you buy more. Tyler built his business on helping people work out what they actually need, and what to stop taking. If you've ever bought a supplement because someone online swore by it, or you're a practitioner wondering how to build a brand, start with this one.
